To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what communications he received from British Nuclear Fuels plc informing him of the first-stage commissioning, by the shearing of advanced gas-cooled reactor fuel, of the thermal oxide reprocessing plant at Sellafield and on the public announcements made at the time.

Mr. Atkins

Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution was informed by British Nuclear Fuels plc on Sunday 27 March 1994 that the first shear of irradiated fuel had taken place in the thermal oxide reprocessing plant.

BNFL made an announcement covering the event in its weekly internal newsletter.
