§ Mrs. Ray MichieTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give details of his Department's policy on coastal and flood defence in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.
§ Sir Hector MonroThe Scottish Office policy on coastal and flood defence is aimed at reducing the risks to people and the environment from flooding and coastal erosion by encouraging the provision of defence measures which are technically, environmentally and economically sound and sustainable. Delivery of these objectives is for local authorities, who are well able to determine the needs of their areas. Schemes promoted by the councils and approved by the Secretary of State attract grant aid towards the eligible costs.
