§ Mr. HardyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make it his policy to ensure the subsistance and car allowances for elected representatives in local government are not lower then those provided for justices of the peace; and if he will discuss with the Chancellor of the Exchequer the question of the taxation of councillors' subsistance allowances.
§ Mr. BaldryWe are currently reviewing the ceilings on councillors' travel and subsistence allowances in the light of the recommendations of the working party on internal management. The tax treatment of such allowances is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to determine.
