HC Deb 26 October 1993 vol 230 c594W
Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security in what percentage of the cases in which a maintenance assessment has been issued and the parent with care is in receipt of income support that parent no longer will be eligible for income support as the result of the payment of the assessed maintenance.

Mr. Burt

The cost of establishing the number of such cases would be disproportionately high.

However, it is estimated that in the long run about 30,000 lone parents will no longer be dependent on the taxpayer by requiring income support because they are receiving maintenance. This represents just under 10 per cent. of all lone parents expected to be receiving child support maintenance.

Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the latest estimate of his Department's current annual expenditure on single parents.

Mr. Burt

It is estimated that the total benefit expenditure on lone parents was £6.6 billion during 1992–93.
