HC Deb 25 October 1993 vol 230 c515W
Mrs. Ray Michie

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations she has had regarding the administration of the beef special premium scheme.

Mr. Jack

I have received correspondence from hon. Members and others: representations have declined as the new arrangements have become more familiar to the livestock industry.

Mrs. Ray Michie

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what plans she has to review the beef special premium scheme to make it simpler to operate, fairer to rearers and finishers without distorting the market and capable of securing the existing compensation for reduced intervention support;

(2) what discussion she has had regarding the National Farmers Union proposals to simplify and improve the beef special premium scheme; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Jack

My officials have had two meetings with representatives of the livestock industry, including the National Farmers Union, to review the beef special premium scheme. We are continuing to examine ways of simplifying the scheme in consultation with the industry within the constraints of the European Community legislation.
