To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total cost of the new prison building programme due to be completed in 1994; and how many prison places will have been provided.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter to Ms Joan Ruddock from Derek Lewis, dated 22 October 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the new prison building programme due to be completed in 1994. When Doncaster prison is opened in 1994 this will see the completion of a building programme which will have provided 11,285 new places at 21 new prisons since 1985. The total cost of the programme will be £l 2 billion.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many new Prison Service establishments have been completed since 1983; and if he will list those establishments together with(a) the total cost of each establishment and (b) the main building contractor in each case.
