HC Deb 29 November 1993 vol 233 cc349-50W
Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will state the number of lavatories adjacent to motorways in Britain in October 1992 and the number at the present date distinguishing between male, female and disabled:

(2) if he will list new toilets adjacent to motorways in Britain on which building work has commenced since October 1992 and those for which planning permission has been given, distinguishing between male, female and disabled.

Mr. Key

In October 1992 there were 44 motorway service areas—MSAs—in England and a further one, Clacket Lane on the M25, has opened since. All are required to provide free lavatories 24 hours a day. At present, the minimum number of lavatories for males, females and disabled people is specified in the leases of the MSAs, but operators are free to provide more. We do not keep records of the number currently available. Pending the provision of full MSAs, the Department also maintains temporary lavatories with facilities for the disabled alongside the M26, M40—two sites—and M56.

Motorway services in Wales and Scotland are the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales and for Scotland.
