To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many cot deaths there have been in the United Kingdom(a) per region and (b) per hospital; and what percentage they have been of live births over the past 10 years.

The available information will be placed in the Library. Information on cot deaths by hospital of occurrence for the years 1983–1992 could be provided only at disproportionate cost. The Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys is examining plans to include infant mortality statistics by district health authority of occurrence in its future routine publications.

Information relating to Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
