HC Deb 24 November 1993 vol 233 c51W
Mr. Madden

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what action he is taking to increase the places for refugees in English as a second language classes.

Mr. Boswell

The provision of tuition to improve the knowledge of English of refugees and others for whom English is not the language spoken at home is a matter for individual further education colleges, schools and local education authorities. The Further Education Funding Council has a duty to secure the provision of adequate facilities for the education of part-time students over compulsory school age and for full-time students aged 19 or over in respect of such courses.
