§ Mr. HunterTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy towards the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 834 relating to Angola.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydUnited Nations Security Council resolution 834 was superseded by resolutions 851 and 864. We strongly support all these resolutions. UNSC'R 864 provides for an embargo on the supply of arms and fuel to UNITA which took effect on 25 September. We have implemented the embargo.
§ Mr. HunterTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on United Kingdom policy towards Angola.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydI refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave the hon. Member for Coventry, North-East (Mr. Ainsworth) on 3 November at column 331.
§ Mr. HunterTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further statement on his policy towards UNITA in the light of UNITA's unilaterally declared ceasefire.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydWe welcome UNITA's unilateral ceasefire offer which I understand has now been matched by the Government of Angola. We are encouraged by UNITA's stated readiness in principle to withdraw from the territory which it has occupied since October 1992, following the recent talks under United Nations auspices in Lusaka. UNITA must now match its words with deeds. We urge it to comply fully with the relevant Security Council resolutions. We hope it will not be necessary to implement the extra measures envisaged in United Nations Security Council resolution 864.
