HC Deb 04 November 1993 vol 231 c454W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is her policy on the banning of tobacco and cigarette advertisements.

Mr. Sackville

The Government believe that the imposition of a ban on all forms of advertising of a product which it is legal to sell would be a major change of principle which would need to be justified in terms of the likely size of any effect. The Government remain to be convinced that sufficient evidence is presently available to provide such justification, although it is considering the responses received to the Department of Health report on the effect of tobacco advertising on tobacco consumption.
