Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many(a) indictable offences, (b) summary motoring offences and (c) summary non-motoring offences were dealt with in the magistrates courts in each years since 1980 and in the last year for which figures are available;

(2) how many (a) indictable offences, (b) summary motoring offences and (c) summary non-motoring offences were dealt with by the juvenile court and latterly by the youth court in each year since 1980 and in the last month available.

Readily available information on the number of defendants proceeded against at magistrates courts by age group and type of offence is published annually in the Command Paper "Criminal statistics England and Wales". Table 6.1 of the 1990 and 1991 editions refers. Copies of these publications are available in the Library. 1992 data—which are provisional—are given in the table. 1993 data will not be available until autumn 1994.
