HC Deb 01 November 1993 vol 231 cc26-7W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what development aid has been given to Peru by Her Majesty's Government in each of the past five years; and for what purposes it was dedicated.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The latest available figures for gross bilateral aid in each of the past five years are: 1988–89 £1.1 million, 1989–90 £0.9 million, 1990–91 £1.6 million, 1991–92 £1.4 million, 1992–93 £2 million (provisional).

This aid has mainly focused on technical co-operation, and specific humanitarian aid—disaster relief. Recent activities have included technical training in the United Kingdom, projects in support of veterinary services to livestock farmers, English language materials and teacher training in secondary schools, and the commissioning of small hydro-electric power plants; and jointly funded projects with British non-governmental organisations in agriculture, community development and health care. Other activities now completed include development of fish products, water leakage control techniques and quality surveillance and cotton pest control.
