§ Mr. Nigel JonesTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were held in remand for(a) three to six months, (b) six to 12 months and (c) over 12 months in each year since 1990; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter Lloyd[holding answer 24 May 1993]Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.
Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Nigel Jones, dated 26 May 1993:
The Secretary of State has asked me to write to you directly in reply to your Parliamentary Question about the number of prisoners held on remand for (a) 3 to 6 months, (b) 6 to 12 months and (c) over 12 months in each year since 1990.
I am sorry to tell you that information is only readily available up to 30 June 1992. To obtain any later information at this stage would involve checking a large number of cases with Prison Service establishments which could only be done at disproportionate cost. Please find enclosed a table showing the length of time held on remand for inmates on 30 June in the years 1990, 1991 and 1992. The information for 1990 and 1991 was taken from Tables 2.3 and 2.4 of "Prison statistics, England and Wales 1991" (Cm 1221) a copy of which is held in the library. The information for 30 June 1992 is provisional; final data will be published in the 1992 edition of "Prison statistics".
