To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what has been the student-tutor ratio in each of the colleges within the current structure of the university of Wales in each year since 1979; and if he will make a statement.

1 Ratio of full time equivalent student load to full time academic staff paid wholly from university general funds. The academic staff numbers exclude part time staff and those staff not wholly funded by the university.

The exclusions numbered 984 academic staff in 1990–91 or 34 per cent. of all academic staff recorded for the University as a whole.

2From 1988 the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology merged with the University of Wales College Cardiff.
