§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the President of the Board of Trade what assessment his Department has made of financial support to the United States aero engine manufacturers by the United States Government; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Sainsbury[holding answer 18 May 1993]: The United States aeroengine industry receives no direct financial support from the United States Government. However, indirect support, primarily from NASA and the Department of Defense for research and development, is estimated by the United Kingdom industry to be approximately $700 million per annum. The high level of indirect support provided by the United States Government to its aircraft industry is one reason why the United Kingdom strongly supported the EC/United States agreement on trade in civil aircraft reached last year.
