To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of the materials purchased by each of the selected broad sectors of industry listed in table 18.3 of the Annual Abstract of Statistics 1992 was imported; what was the corresponding figure in 1983; and if he will provide an estimate, in each case, for the years 1968, 1973 and 1979 together with figures for changes in weighted output and for import penetration from the (i) EEC, (ii) non-EEC and (iii) total, ignoring the changing industrial and import classification, but giving overlapping figures as appropriate.

Estimates of the import content of materials purchased by manufacturers are available for 1968, 1972, 1974, 1984 and 19851. These estimates, the most detailed available, are available in the Library.
