HC Deb 20 May 1993 vol 225 c296W
Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the operation of the fair employment legislation in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Atkins

The fair employment legislation in Northern Ireland is operating very well. More than 4,000 firms are registered with the Fair Employment Commission and are monitoring their work force composition. During 1993, over 1,500 companies are required to complete their first three-yearly review of employment practices. Where necessary, these companies will be required to take affirmative action.

The Fair Employment Tribunal offers real redress to people with a genuine grievance. A number of significant decisions and substantial awards and settlements have already been made.

The effectiveness of the law is to be formally reviewed by the Government in 1995.
