Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will estimate the proportion of average household income in each region being paid through national insurance contributions in each year from 1978–79 to 1996–97.

[holding answer 29 March 1993]:The table shows the available information, relating to employees' national insurance contributions as a percentage of household income by region, for the calendar years 1984 to 1990. Regional estimates of household income have not been compiled for years prior to 1984, and estimates for 1991 will be published in the May 1993 issue of "Economic Trends".
