To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he will now give his support to Britain seeking objective 2 status for the London region from the European Community.

Mr. Heseltine

The criteria for eligibility under objective 2 for the period from 1994 will be decided during the review of the structural funds regulations which has just begun. I do not expect decisions on the designation of specific areas to arise before the summer. It would therefore be premature to state now to which, if any, particular areas, we can give support.
