The imposition of VAT on domestic fuels and power and the increases in road fuel duties announced by my right hon. Friend are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in 2000 by around three million tonnes carbon, emissions of sulphur dioxide by about 32,000 tonnes and emissions of oxides of nitrogen by around 57,000 tonnes.
