HC Deb 25 March 1993 vol 221 c709W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what statutory provisions govern rest periods after continuous hours of work, the availability of rest facilities, refreshment and lavatories for bus drivers in London.

Mr. Norris

Drivers of vehicles used for the carriage of passengers on a regular service of not more than 50 km are subject to the domestic drivers' hours rules contained in the Transport Act 1968.

The Act limits a continuous driving period to five and a half hours, after which a break of at least 30 minutes must be taken. During the break, a driver must be able to obtain rest and refreshment, but there are no statutory provisions governing the availability of rest and other facilities for bus drivers.
