§ Mr. LeighMy Department is currently funding vehicle engine technologies into improved engine efficiency and emission control with grants amounting to over £2.5 million.
Because the information on engine research is recorded as part of the Department's overall vehicle technology support, it has not been possible separately to identify an accurate figure for engine research or for any other specific area without incurring a disproportionate cost. However, over the last five years—1987–88 to 1991–92—the Department's overall support for vehicle engine technologies exceeded £5 million of a total of £10.389 million grants for vehicle research.
