To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the United Kingdom's gross domestic product is generated by(a) publicly quoted companies and (b) private companies.

[holding answer 16 March 1993]The latest estimate of the proportion of the United Kingdom's gross domestic product that is generated by companies is for 1991, when it was 53.7 per cent. A split between publicly quoted and private companies is not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
