HC Deb 15 March 1993 vol 221 c108W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what grant in aid or other Government funding was given to(a) the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, and (b) the Botanic Garden, Glasgow, in each of the past 10 years.

Sir Hector Monro

The grant in aid provided to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh from 1986–87 onwards, and before that as direct running costs as part of the then Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland, was as follows:

£
1983–84 210,000
1984–85 232,000
1985–86 1,880,000
1986–87 3,680,000
1987–88 4,060,000
1988–89 4,232,000
1989–90 4,596,000
1991–92 4,764,138
1992–93 5,596,000

The botanic garden, Glasgow is not the Secretary of State's responsibility but that of Glasgow district council. Government funding to the district council comes from revenue support grant and it is for the council to decide how much of this it apportions to the botanic garden.
