§ Mr. SteinbergTo ask the Secretary of State for Education what education alternatives are available to pupils who have been permanently excluded from schools.
§ Mr. ForthOnce a pupil has been permanently excluded from a school, it is open to the parents to seek a place for their child at another school within a reasonable distance from their home. In most instances a school would not be able to refuse to admit the child unless by so doing it would exceed its standard number. LEAs also have the power under section 56 of the Education Act 1944 to provide education otherwise than at school where necessary to meet a pupil's needs. It is also open to the LEA to consider whether the child has special educational needs which call for the authority to determine the special educational provision that should be made for him.
