To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many prosecutions were brought by environmental health officers in each of the last five years; and what percentage of(a) cases and (b) contested cases resulted in convictions.

Information prior to 1991 is not held centrally.

During 1991, environmental health officers brought 1,143 prosecutions in connection with hygiene and microbiological contamination. In addition, there were 691 prosecutions relating to chemical contamination and extraneous matter, some of which related to food safety and some to quality. The available information does not show whether cases were successful or contested.
