To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many staff are employed in the Valuation Office and at what cost to public funds; when notices were issued requesting supply of information in respect of non-domestic rating; when these notices were issued; and at what cost.

The average number of staff employed in the Valuation Office in the 1992–93 financial year was 5,806 at a cost of £121,558,000.

Notices requesting supply of information in respect of non-domestic rating were issued in a phased programme spread over April to June 1993. The cost of issuing the notices will amount to approximately £500,000.
