HL Deb 23 June 1993 vol 547 cc11-2WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether there is any truth in the North Korean report of 28th May that "a British nuclear material company is going to open its office in South Korea and sell out plutonium".

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Baroness Denton of Wakefield)

I understand that British Nuclear Fuels plc and Urenco Limited are discussing a number of business opportunities in the Republic of Korea. The sale of plutonium is not one of them. All nuclear material licensed for export from the United Kingdom to the Republic of Korea would be covered by international safeguards.
