HC Deb 14 June 1993 vol 226 cc476-7W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what reports he has received on the role of British military forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina in safeguarding the property and lives of Croats coming under attack from muslim forces; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hanley

British forces undertook a recent mission, on request from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to help evacuate some 186 people—mostly Croat women and children—from a church at the village of Guca Gora in central Bosnia, which was coming under small arms and mortar fire. During the evacuation, which was completed successfully, the soldiers themselves came under fire and returned fire in self-defence.
