§ Mr. KeyThe statutory provisions for the display of vehicle registration numbers are contained within section II of the Road Vehicles (Licensing and Registration) Regulations 1971. Law enforcement with regard to personalised number plates is a matter for the police. The maximum penalty for the illegal display of a registration number is £1,000.
§ Mr. SnapeTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many personalised number plate the DVLA has sold to drivers registered in the west midlands since 1986; how many complaints he has received from that region concerning the withdrawal of personalised number plates by DVLA; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. KeyThe Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency commenced selling registration number in December 1989. Statistics on the number sold to motorists in the west midlands are not available. The Secretary of State has not withdrawn any such numbers and there have been no complaints from the west midlands.
