To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the latest figures for the number of lone-parent families living on income support; and what proportion they make up of all lone-parent families.

In 1991 there were about 1.3 million lone parent families in Great Britain¹ of whom 0.871 million (67 per cent.) were living on income support². In May 1992 there were 0.957 million lone parent families on income support²; no estimate is yet available of the number of lone parents in Great Britain in 1992. ¹ Office of Population Censuses and Survey. ² Income Support Statistics Annual Enquiries May 1991 and 1992.
