The Home Secretary has asked me to write to you directly in reply to your Parliamentary Question about the number of children and young people originating in Wales detained under Section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and kept in prison establishments.
The available information is for those detained under section 53 after sentencing by courts in Wales. The latest information is for 31 May 1993. On that date, there were 7 detainees aged between 15 and 17 and 4 detainees aged between 18 and 20 who were recorded as having received Section 53 sentences from courts in Wales.

§ Mr. Peter LloydThe available information is for those received into Prison Service establishments after sentences under Section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 from courts in Wales during the years 1989 to 1991. Figures for 1992 are not yet available. The details for those recorded as being received from Welsh courts are given in the table for the age bands 14 to 16 and 17 to 20. These figures do not cover those received into local authority care.
