HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 c839W
Ms Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the latest information he has available on the number of people participating in(a) action for community employment, (b) the youth training programme, (c) the job training programme, (d) the enterprise allowance scheme, (e) job clubs and (f) Restart courses; how many participants are expected to participate in each programme in 1993–94; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Atkins

There are no Restart courses run in Northern Ireland. Under a Restart programme people who have been unemployed for 26 weeks or more are interviewed every 26 weeks when training needs and employment opportunities are discussed with a view to helping them find work. Otherwise the information is as follows:

Scheme Number of participants at 30 June 1993 Number expected to participate in 1993–94
ACE 9,561 9,500
YTP 9,806 12,500
JTP 4,155 4,450
Jobskills1 1,611 2,000
Business Start Programme2 816 1,200
Job clubs 1,776 4,080
1Jobskills is a single integrated scheme which is being piloted in 2 areas in Northern Ireland and which may eventually replace both YTP and JTP.
2This scheme has replaced the Enterprise Allowance scheme.
