HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 c895W
Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has for the disposal of intermediate level decommissioning wastes from United Kingdom nuclear power stations; and what capacity will be available within the proposed Nirex repository to accommodate these wastes.

Mr. Yeo

Intermediate level radioactive waste will be stored until it can be disposed of in Nirex's deep disposal facility. The capacity of the facility has yet to be established.

Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what research has been undertaken by his Department into the use of integrated toxicological potential as a basis for determining equivalence between different categories of radioactive waste; and if he will make it his policy to seek the views of THORP's overseas customers concerning such practices.

Mr. Yeo

Consideration of the various aspects of waste substitution is still to be completed. Should substitution be approved it would be for British Nuclear Fuels plc to negotiate appropriate arrangements with its customers within guidelines set by the Government.

Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has received from British Nuclear Fuels plc in regard to the present projected capacity of the vitrification plant at Sellafield to handle all the high level waste(a) stockpiled and (b) planned to be created arising from reprocessing contracts currently signed by BNFL.

Mr. Yeo

My right hon. Friend has received no such information.
