To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has for restoring financial aid to Malawi.

Progress on political and economic reform since the referendum has been encouraging. We have told President Banda that we plan to resume balance of payments aid in September and that we will be reviewing other aspects of our aid programme to Malawi at about that time. We will continue to follow closely the course of political and economic events in Malawi and this will continue to influence our aid programme.
