Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 26 July 19931A decision on whether to apply for structural funds assistance for the proposed development is a matter for the project sponsor or sponsors.

Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what environmental assessment has been undertaken on the proposed development at the Parklea (Kelburn) site in the Inverclyde enterprise zone; what is the impact of the proposals in Parklea on the wildlife conservation value of the site; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 26 July 19931A lengthy study was conducted by Paisley college to assess the possible effect of reclamation of the Parklea site on its wildlife, and in particular its birdlife. The hon. Member can obtain a copy of the report, should he wish to do so, from Inverclyde district council.

Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if the Parklea (Kelburn) site in the Inverclyde enterprise zone is designated as having any wildlife conservation interest; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 26 July 19931The foreshore at the Parklea (Kelburn) site is part of the Erskine-Langbank site of special scientific interest which was notified by the Nature Conservancy Council on 29 October 1984 in respect of the ornithological interest of the area. The site of special scientific interest forms part of the section of the inner Clyde estuary which was proposed by the council for designation as a special protection area by my right hon. Friend under the EC directive on the conservation of wild birds—79/409/EEC—and as a site under the Ramsar convention on wetlands of international importance.
