Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with learned body authorities about the agreements on astronomy involving the United States of America, Canada, Chile, other south American countries and the United Kingdom relating to the Gemini project of two optical infra red telescopes, one in the Nauna Kec site in Hawaii, and the other in Sierra Non in Chile.

None. The proposal is an inter-agency agreement involving participation by the Science and Engineering research council. The research councils are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what progress he has made in the process of the appointment of an Astronomer Royal for Scotland.
