HC Deb 26 July 1993 vol 229 c663W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many accidents have occurred on the Welshpool bypass since its opening on 16 July; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Wyn Roberts

I am advised that up to 21 July, four accidents have been recorded by Dyfed/Powys police on the bypass or at its junctions. From an initial examination, it does not appear that the design of the new road has contributed to the incidents. The situation will be kept under close review.

Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will instruct his highways department to re-design the Sarnybryncaled junctions on the Welshpool bypass; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Wyn Roberts

This junction has been designed in accordance with national standards. As is usual in the period after the opening of a new stretch of trunk road, use of the bypass will be closely monitored and any necessary improvements identified at Sarnybryncaled or elsewhere will be introduced.
