To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average daily prison population at the latest date for which figures are available and in the previous five years.

[holding answer 12 July 1993]: I have asked Mr. E. W. Frizzell, the chief executive of the Scottish Prison Service, to arrange for a reply to be given to the hon. Member.

Letter from E. W. Frizzell to Mr. Donald Dewar, dated 16 July 1993: As Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service, it is my responsibility to answer questions about relevant operational matters. I am therefore replying to your recent Question asking what was the average daily prison population at the latest date for which figures are available and in the previous 5 years. On 25 June 1993 the actual population was 5772. The average population for the current financial year so far, ie 1 April 1993 to 25 June 1993 is 5827. The average population for the five previous financial years is as follows:
