HL Deb 05 July 1993 vol 547 c40WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What preventive diplomacy they will exert with other EC states to persuade General Babangida of Nigeria to withdraw the decree issued today nullifying the 1993 presidential election conducted on 12th June and disbanding the National Electoral Commission.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The European Council in Copenhagen on 22nd June noted with great concern that recent developments in Nigeria could place in question the transition to civil rule after the successful presidential election on 12th June. On 25th June, the Community and its member states issued a further statement, a copy of which has been placed in the Libraries of the House, deploring the subsequent decision to annul the presidential election, and disband the National Electoral Commission.
