asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of their assurances given in 1992 that the A.1 trunk road between Morpeth and Edinburgh would eventually be converted into dual carriageway throughout its length, they can now identify the timetable involved in honouring that commitment.

On 2nd March 1992, the Government announced that it would be desirable for the A.1 to be fully dualled between Edinburgh and Newcastle. We made it clear that progress would depend on the overall availability of resources, the relative claims of schemes elsewhere and other normal criteria for bringing schemes forward. There arc currently three schemes under construction and 10 schemes in preparation for the route.
