To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 October 1992.

§ Mr. Portillo
On 1 October 1992 there were 567,850 staff in post in central Government. Of those 510,651 were non-industrials and 57,199 were classified as being in industrial work. A summary showing staff in post by Department has been placed in the Library.
