HC Deb 19 January 1993 vol 217 c157W
Mr. Trimble

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many jobs in manufacturing industry have been created in the United Kingdom in 1992 as a result of foreign investment.

Mr. Sainsbury

The most recent figures available are for the 1991–92 financial year. In this period 42,767 jobs were associated with foreign direct investment in the manufacturing sector; 17,615 of these jobs were newly created.

These figures are based on information provided by companies at the time of the announcement of the decision to invest. There is no requirement to notify the Department and so the figures include only those projects where the Invest in Britain Bureau and its regional partners were involved or which have come to their notice. They take no account of subsequent developments.
