HC Deb 26 February 1993 vol 219 cc764-6W
Mr. Bayley

To ask the President of the Board of Trade, pursuant to his answer of 9 February,Official Report, column 563, when he approved the use of the name "Somerset University" under the Business Names Act 1985; and whether the statement submitted to him by the owner of that business stated that a written request for an opinion had been made to the Secretry of State for Education.

Mr. Neil Hamilton

The use of the name was approved on 9 November 1988. The regulations which specified the word university as requiring the approval of the Secretary of State did not come into effect until 1 January 1983, and did not apply to names in use before that date. Since there was evidence that the name had been in use before that date there was no requirement for the owner of the business to submit a statement from the Department of Education and Science.
