To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the future of Northern Ireland Railways.

Mr. Atkins

The Government have demonstrated their commitment to the future of railways in Northern Ireland through schemes for a cross-harbour rail link in Belfast, the accelerated upgrading of the Belfast to Dublin railway and the provision of a new railway station at Great Victoria street, Belfast.

In addition we are currently examining the consultant's report about the scope for introducing a private element into the management and operation of Northern Ireland Railways.
