HC Deb 17 February 1993 vol 219 c259W
35. Mr. Gallie

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on trade with the United States of America.

Mr. Heseltine

The United States is our largest trading partner outside Europe and our trading relationship is therefore of the greatest significance. I have already conveyed to my counterparts in the new Administration the importance I attach to finding constructive solutions to the current EC-US bilateral issues, particularly in the steel and vehicles sector, and in bringing the Uruguay round to a successful conclusion. The position adopted by the EC Commission in its talks last week with the United States Administration on these matters has our full support.

The reviving United States economy provides considerable opportunities for British companies in the United States. I hope shortly to announce a major new campaign to encourage our exporters to seize these opportunities.
