To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the ratio of expenditure on administration to total expenditure for(a) county councils and (b) shire district councils; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Robin Squire

The budgeted ratio of expenditure on general administration (not allocated to other services) to total expenditure on services (both measured net of sales, fees and charges) in 1992–93 was 0.3 per cent. in county councils and 3 per cent. in shire district councils.
