HC Deb 17 February 1993 vol 219 c210W
Mr. Hardy

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what action he is taking to assist towards improved success rates in further education and to increase motivation among those in the 16 to 19-year-old age groups who are involved.

Mr. Boswell

The Government's clear policy is to increase both the participation and attainment of 16 to 19-year-olds. Public expenditure plans already provide for a substantial expansion of provision. Within this framework, we are working with and through the new Further Education Funding Council, qualifications bodies and others to promote three high quality qualification pathways—GCE A-levels and AS, general national vocational qualifications and national vocational qualifications—and to help young people choose the courses which are best for them. We are also working to develop and publish indicators to demonstrate and encourage the improved performance that will follow this better match of provision to need.
