To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will state, on the basis of the latest information available to him, what are the prospects for each of the four remaining coal mines in Wales; and what discussions he has had with the NCB of plans for the sinking of new mines in Wales.

Betws and Taff Merthyr are the subject of a consultation process currently being conducted by British Coal. Point of Ayr is being considered in the context of the coal review.

We have had no discussions with British Coal about opening new mines in Wales.
